Need analysis is refers to activities that
are involved in collecting information that will serve as the basis for
developing a curriculum that will meet the need of particular group of
students. here using target situation analysis approaches as our theory to
figure out needs of flight attendant. In this finding, we find what is target
need also learning needs of flight attendant.
As steward and stewardess, they need
English for their jobs because it requires them to communicate with their
passengers in the plane every single day. However, English is the main language of the Aviation
industry,
which is used by the authorities to create better communication among the crew
and to avoid problematic situations while
handling passengers. For intercity flights within Indonesia, the flight attendants may use
their local language more often but all safety and emergency procedures, training and related items on-board flights in the aircraft, are done in English.
Not only communicatication with the
passengers but the flight attendants also ensure the safety and comfort of the passengers during an airline flight. They use English to do a safety
demonstrations or monitor passengers as they watch a safety video. Some of the
passengers especially in VIP class who come from any other countries like
Spain, England, France and others only communicate in English, so they have to
master English in order to service foreign passengers.
Furthermore, according to our data they
only need some skills to master to support their jobs. Those skills are
speaking, reading, and listening. In speaking and skill, they need to interact
with the passenger, especially to brief the safety procedure in emergency
situations, such as how to use oxygen and life jacket for adult and baby. Also,
in reading skill, they need to be able to read the safety manual to enable them to explain
it to the passenger because in safety procedures,
the text being used is full English. Furthermore,
for the
listening skills, they need to hear the complaints or converse with the passengers which will ensure the
smooth running of all the services during the flight.
